Two Kinds of IP Addresses
Every device that connects to the internet is assigned an IP address — a unique numerical identifier that allows data to be routed to the right destination. But not all IP addresses behave the same way. Most home and small business internet connections use dynamic IP addresses. From the ISP’s perspective, dynamic assignment is efficient: since not all customers are online simultaneously, a pool of IP addresses can serve a much larger customer base than a one-to-one static assignment would allow.
What Is a Static IP Address?
A static IP address is permanently assigned and does not change. Once configured, the device or network always uses the same IP address, regardless of reboots, connection drops, or the passage of time.
Static IP addresses can be assigned in two ways:
- Manually configured at the device or router level. A network administrator sets the specific IP address in the device’s network settings, bypassing DHCP entirely.
- Reserved via DHCP so that the DHCP server always assigns the same address to a specific device based on its MAC address (hardware identifier). This is sometimes called a DHCP reservation and is effectively static from the device’s perspective.
For public internet connections, getting a truly static public IP address typically requires requesting one from your ISP — and paying extra for it. Static IPs are standard on business internet plans and available as an add-on for some residential plans.
How DHCP Assigns Dynamic IP Addresses
The DHCP process follows a four-step handshake known as DORA:
- Discover: Your device broadcasts a message to the network: “I need an IP address.”
- Offer: A DHCP server responds with an available IP address and lease terms.
- Request: Your device formally requests the offered address.
- Acknowledge: The DHCP server confirms the assignment. Your device now has an IP address for the lease duration.
This process happens automatically and invisibly in the background every time your device connects to a network. For home networks, your router acts as the DHCP server for local devices while simultaneously receiving a dynamic IP from your ISP.
Pros and Cons of Dynamic IP Addresses
Advantages:
- No configuration required. Dynamic IP assignment is automatic. Home users and small businesses never need to think about it.
- Cost-effective. Dynamic IPs are included in standard internet plans at no extra charge.
- Some privacy benefit. Because the IP address changes, your online activity cannot be as easily correlated over time based solely on your IP address. Each session may appear to come from a different address.
- Efficient use of IP address space. ISPs can serve more customers from a smaller pool of addresses.
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for hosting. If you run a web server, game server, or any service that others need to reach at a consistent address, a changing IP address makes that impossible without workarounds like dynamic DNS (DDNS) services.
- Inconsistent remote access. If you need to connect to your home network remotely, you must either use a DDNS service that tracks your current IP or ask someone at home to look up the current address before you connect.

Disadvantages:
- Costs more. Static IP addresses typically require a business-grade internet plan or an additional fee.
- Requires configuration. Static IPs must be manually set up and maintained.
- Security exposure. A fixed, well-known IP address is easier to target persistently. Attackers who discover a static IP can direct sustained attacks at it. Dynamic IPs offer some security through obscurity by changing regularly.

When Dynamic IPs Are the Right Choice

- Small offices that use cloud services rather than hosting their own servers.
- Privacy-conscious users who benefit from their IP address changing periodically.
When Static IPs Are the Right Choice
- Web servers and application servers that must be reachable at a consistent address.
- Mail servers that need PTR records and consistent IP reputation for email deliverability.
- VPN gateways and remote access servers where IP-based authentication is used.
- Network cameras and IoT devices that need to be reliably accessible.
- Business offices using leased lines or dedicated internet access for consistent network management.
How Static vs. Dynamic Status Affects IP Lookup Results

Dynamic IP addresses rotate through customer assignments, and geolocation databases may not update quickly enough to reflect where the address is currently in use.

How to Check Whether Your IP Address Is Static or Dynamic
Method 1: Check with your ISP. The simplest approach is to ask your internet provider whether your plan includes a static or dynamic IP address. Most consumer plans use dynamic IPs; most business plans can provide static IPs.

A Note on Private vs. Public Static/Dynamic IPs
The static vs. dynamic distinction applies to both private network IPs (assigned by your router) and public internet IPs (assigned by your ISP), but they are managed separately.
Your router may assign a static private IP address (via DHCP reservation) to your home server while your ISP still provides a dynamic public IP address for your internet connection.
